Starting his journey at Harris Sushames, a boutique legal practice, Scott initially joined as a law student, quickly transitioning to a solicitor. Over his three-and-a-half-year tenure, he developed a strong foundation in Criminal Law, Commercial Law, and Property Law. Working closely with senior criminal lawyers, Scott played an integral role in handling complex criminal cases, from serious drug offenses to high-profile rape and murder charges. He managed his own caseload, demonstrating his capability to oversee cases from inception to resolution, and made regular appearances in various courts, honing his understanding of legal proceedings. Additionally, Scott took charge of commercial litigation files and collaborated with a conveyancer to navigate property law transactions, showcasing his versatility and dedication.

Scott then advanced his career at Moray & Agnew, a leading national law firm. As a CTP specialist lawyer, he took on the responsibility of conducting both unlitigated and litigated claims before the District and Supreme Courts of Queensland. He represented major CTP insurers in a wide range of cases, from routine claims to those involving serious injuries that rendered claimants commercially unemployable. His adeptness in navigating the claims process allowed him to bring matters to swift resolutions through cost-effective settlements while identifying fraudulent claims requiring trial. Scott’s ability to assess complex liability issues and provide strategic advice made him a valuable asset in the firm, facilitating negotiations and ensuring optimal outcomes for clients.

Scott’s duties at Moray & Agnew included, among other things:
• Working as a CTP specialist lawyer acting on behalf of industry leading CTP insurers, defending a range of claims from major injury claims to more routine-based claims.
• Representing major CTP insurers in claims involving claimants who have been rendered commercially unemployable, as well as claims where people have sustained minor cervical spine injuries through to complex brain injuries and significant psychological conditions.
• Navigating the claims process effectively and efficiently bringing suitable matters to a swift resolution via cost effective settlement methods while simultaneously identifying fraudulent and exaggerated claims which need to be brought to trial.
• Facilitating negotiations and settlements through mediation, alternative dispute resolution processes and compulsory conferences, often without requiring counsel’s involvement.
• Handling claims involving complex liability issues, defences of contributory negligence, as well as difficult and complicated medical and economic loss issues.
• Assessing liability, quantum, and evidence and providing strategic advice for further investigations to optimise claims management strategies.

Additionally, during his third year of university studies in law in 2013, Scott pursued additional qualifications to become a Justice of the Peace (Qualified). Subsequently, for a short period he engaged in practical experience at the Southport Courthouse, where he honed his skills and expertise. As a Justice of the Peace (Qualified), he undertook crucial responsibilities, handling pivotal documents that could impact individuals’ lives. His duties encompassed witnessing the signing of documents as required by law, certifying documents as true copies, witnessing statutory declarations and affidavits, verifying land-title documents and mortgage documentation, as well as issuing summonses and warrants. This experience not only enriched his legal acumen but also underscored his commitment to upholding the integrity of legal processes and serving the community.
